TPT volumes surpass 2010 levels

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) handled a record number of containers last year – surpassing volumes handled during the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup. According to Karl Socikwa, chief executive of TPT, SA ports handled 2 203 million TEUs compared to the 2 004 million handled in 2010. “Because of the impact of the World Cup we used 2009 volumes to set our budget which was only 2 162 million TEUs,” said Socikwa. “We are very happy with the volume performance that has been strong in all major cargo categories.” He said targets set for automotives, bulk and break bulk cargo had also exceeded expectations.
