ACHIEVING IMPROVEMENTS in the logistics chain demands focus on the lead time as a whole. It’s the interface between the various components that makes the difference and helps to manage the supply chain as an integrated system. Inland haulage operator RailRoad Africa has fully embraced this concept in its efforts to help customers reduce their landside costs. “We’re able to offer competitive, all encompassing intermodal packages with commitment from Spoornet,” says CEO Deon Weelson. “This ensures that the rail intermodal service becomes a highly competitive one, working on service delivery standards as a primary focus.” The company has also continued to invest heavily in electronic solutions. “We’ve introduced an IT link into our customers’ offices thereby automating the admin / tracking functions and reducing man hours as a result,” says Weelson. “We’re also working closely with customers and introducing smart moves to improve transit times by utilising our national cartage infrastructure and our in transit facilities.” A time / value analysis with customers is also helping to pass on potential savings, says Weelson. “Triangulation alternatives, quick destuffing options and after-hours unpacking are some of the cost-saving measures we can provide. “We firmly believe that we can offer our customers real opportunities to reduce landside costs moving forward.”
