ALAN PEAT SINCE THE inception of the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA), 436 000 learners have participated in structured learning interventions, according to CEO, Dr Piet Bothma. “This is an indication that increasing numbers of employers and employees are taking skills development seriously,” he said. There are currently 111 983 learners registered for training programmes, 70 549 of whom completed their programme during the 2003/2004 financial year. And in its 2004 results, TETA - which is one of the top-performing SETAs in the country - recorded total revenue of R191-million and total expenditure of R147-m for the year to March this year. TETA supported the levy-paying companies in the transport sector by disbursing more than R90-m for mandatory grants; approved R21-m for 280 projects across the eight TETA chambers for discretionary grant projects; and approved R14-m of its own funds to implement learnership programmes.
