Sydney set to become Oz’s biggest container port

A rail-freight precinct at the Port of Sydney in Australia, costing the equivalent of R19.125 billion, is designed to knock Melbourne off its perch as the country’s biggest container port.

The master plan is to put in 850 000 square metres of warehouse, an import and export rail terminal, and an interstate rail terminal handling a total of 1.5 million TEU.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Melbourne only has limited rail connections, and Sydney’s focus on the economics of container rail transport is expected to boost its business sufficiently to push it into the No 1 spot.
