Swazi iron ore mine opens roadfreight opportunities

MBABANE – The longdormant iron ore mine at Ngwenya near Swaziland’s Oshoek border post with South Africa is close to reopening, and its road transport firm has yet to be contracted. Although the ore from the mine was originally moved by rail when operations first began in 1964, necessitating the creation of Swaziland Railway, the rail line’s physical infrastructure was removed in 1995 and the newly mined ore will leave the mine by road. About 60 trucks a day are expected to make the journey to Maputo via Swaziland’s Mhlumeni Border Post with that country, although some ore will be offloaded at Mpaka where a rail line presently used to transport coal will continue the journey to Maputo’s port.
