Swazi border is next on upgrade hit list

THE BORDER posts at Golela, between KwazuluNatal and Swaziland, and at Oshoek on the Mpumalanga-Swaziland border, are next in line to be fully upgraded under the National Inter-Departmental Structure for Border Control (NIDS) programme.
"In doing this we are taking a far more robust approach to the entire matter," says NIDS executive director Brian van Niekerk. "We didn't have a uniform system in the past. Air, sea and landside operations were all dealt with in different ways and we often made mistakes in our approach.
"Now we have introduced what we call the PPP (public and private partnership) system and it is working. We are getting the forces of police, customs and revenue services working closely with the private sector and have introduced an implementation committee at each border post to facilitate it.
"Frankly, what we are trying to do is get everything up and running without tramping on anyone's toes. After all everyone connected with a border post operation has the right to say what should be done for the good of all."
