Supporting junior miners

The port of East London
has the capacity to serve
as an export terminal
for a range of bulk
commodities, according to
terminal manager Nelisiwe
Mbenekazi.
“We are working with
emerging miners for bulk
commodities such as
manganese and iron ore,”
she says.
Earlier plans to export
coal through East London
came to nought after a
successful trial shipment due
to the closure of the mining
operations near Queenstown
in the Eastern Cape.
“But we have not written
East London off for bulk
exports,” says Mbenekazi.
The port continues
to handle large wheat
imports, and is also looking
at increasing volumes of
cement.
