GOOD CROPS bode well for the cold chain service providers involved in transportation, storage and shipping of perishables through Durban.
Freddie Beukmann and Tania Jennings, co-owners of specialist perishable freighting company Ocean Forwarding Logistics, say that the strengthened rand should not impact negatively as the major players in the cold supply chain plan for such fluctuations ahead of time.
“The tough conditions did manage to eradicate a number of smaller players who had no real substance to their business. Those left can now brace themselves for good crop exports.”
Most of the winter container and breakbulk exports are destined for European markets through Rotterdam and Sheerness in Britain while summer exports of mainly mangoes and litchis head for the Far East.
They foresee no problems with availability of reefers to meet demand.
OFL is also positioning itself to handle more dry cargo to augment its summer and winter season activities.
