LOGISTICS MAJOR Spotco has just celebrated its tenth anniversary, and it’s been a decade of growth and consolidation.
Set up in 1994 as a 4-man outfit to provide an outsourced transport facility for the airfreight clearing and forwarding industry, the company today employs 120 permanent staff and 70 contract workers with offices in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
“Clearing and forwarding is the agent’s core business,” says co-founder Adele De Pauw. “Our expertise is in logistics, and outsourcing this key element makes good practical sense. We effectively become our clients’ transport department.”
Profreight Air Cargo, now DHL, was the first customer to come on board, followed by Kuehne + Nagel, Expeditors, Freitan and others. Spotco staff members are based in-house at the agents’ premises, arranging collection of export cargo, delivery of import cargo and organising any special packaging needs where required.
The company has also developed a strong focus on project cargo, handling a variety of unusual shipments for its expanding client base comprising agents of all sizes.
Spotco’s current fleet comprises 102 vehicles ranging from small delivery vans to superlinks.
