SPOORNET IS undertaking an environmental self-audit in 13 'high risk' functions within its own operations as part of its 'Responsible Care' campaign where the safety, health, environment and quality challenges facing the organisation are to be addressed.
High on its list of concern is the chemical industry where activities impact on the environment, not only from manufacturing sites, but also during transportation, says Transnet's deputy director Mafika Mkwanazi.
Spoornet's commitment to the programme reflects an ethic, an attitude, a method of thinking about the way we do business and our role in society, he says. The completion of the environmental self-audit functions within Spoornet will provide a quantifiable benchmark and target for further improvement in our environmental performance.
Spoornet is to compile risk profiling and health assessments to identify dangers of operational exposures to personnel and public, and to compile a waste management policy to guide efforts in both economic and environmental improvements.
