... and promises pre-clearance once Maputo Corridor is in operation
MOZAMBIQUE HAS employed 500 new customs officials, who are currently undergoing training, as a step to alleviate the problems of congestion and delays at the Lebombo border post.
This emerged during a meeting hosted by the Cross Border Road Transport Agency in Pretoria recently.
Mozambique also indicated during the conference that pre-clearance would be possible once the Maputo Corridor was fully operational.
The South African Department of Public Works reported that the construction of a proposed one-stop border post would eliminate the problem of delays.
However, this would not happen in the near future as the completion date was set for the year 2001.
It was also decided at the conference that, in future, there would be a single Maputo Corridor transport conference instead of the normal Joint Route Management Group meetings with service providers, government departments of both countries and operators.
