Human interest story sparks PE project

AN INTRIGUING human interest story lies behind the sponsorship by Safmarine Container Lines of the building of a centre in a farming area some 100 km west of Port Elizabeth.
What started as a relatively simple request to build a creche for the 200 children of local farm workers, was found to reveal a far greater need in this previously disadvantaged South African rural community.
During the feasibility study it became apparent that there existed an alcohol abuse problem in the community which had led to a child abuse situation. Additionally the local school had capacity problems, and a medical clinic and a paypoint for old age pensioners were needed.
Thus the multi-purpose 'Mondplaas Centre' project was conceived and built using six Safmarine containers with walls and roof added.
