Spoornet sharpens global plans

ALL OF the international interests at Spoornet are to be amalgamated into one proposed new business unit from April if management plans presented to the Transnet board and the Department of Public Enterprises are accepted.
Spoornet International
is intended to house
the railways' 31.6% shareholding in Comazar - an SA-France alliance - and the just-established locomotive leasing and freight logistics company.
The first has developed business in the likes
of Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Madagascar, and the second is designed to create value from the 1 600 locomotives that are expected to be released in Spoornet's 15-year rolling stock upgrade programme.
The company's primary drive will be to develop joint-ventures in Africa and overseas - with China, India, Brazil (where Spoornet already has a concession), Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania and Mauritius all on the list. Also, relationships have already been established with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.
First target for Spoornet International is expected to be a 25-year concession to rehabilitate and operate the Zambian railways
network.
