SPOORNET IS 'looking at areas of mutual interest' with holdings under the Bidvest banner, but no positive agreements have been reached at this stage between the two parties, says Spoornet media liaison manager Mike Asefovitz.
He was reacting to press reports emanating from a Bidvest financial statement in which Bidvest revealed it was negotiating with Spoornet with a view to possibly handling what was termed 'freight management' on behalf of the parastatal.
"There is nothing concrete in place," says Asefovitz, "but Bidvest does have some sectors under its wing that can be viewed as likely strategic alliance positions for Spoornet.
We have been looking closely at the possibility of getting more freight back on to rail from road and this is an avenue which we can explore.
"Spoornet, it must be remembered, has now positioned itself as a major logistics player, and these kind of alliances therefore become more and more of interest to our future planning."
