LOSS REDUCTION is a vital aim in cargo handling but cannot always be prevented entirely, even if all possible precautions are taken, says Gerling Marine risk management department. Even in the far more secure operation of cargo stowed in containers, damage can occur. But once this has happened, the extent of the loss can be reduced by taking suitable and immediate action, they say. For instance, coffee that has become moist during transportation can be processed immediately, while in the case of corrosion the first signs can be removed and the goods can be preserved before onward transportation or further storage. Chemicals can be sent back to the manufacturer to be reprocessed, while it is also possible for goods to be sold immediately as long as a reasonable price can still be obtained. It is not essential therefore to dispose of damaged cargo immediately as a total loss factor. By initiating direct action together with the local surveyor, loss can be limited. Gerling points out that even with appropriate packaging methods, containers and goods can be damaged due to improper loading and unloading. Specialists recognise such problems and can initiate immediate action to minimise accrued losses
