A FIRM may be incorporated into a giant corporation but still retain its identity as a personalised service provider that shippers seek for customised shipping solutions. Six months into its being placed in the Unitrans stable, Buffalo Freight Systems contributes as much to its parent company as it receives, said MD Margrit Wolff “We operate like a family at Buffalo, and we know all our agents and customers. Because of this personalised attention, business has been fantastic for us. By all economic measures, the SA economy should not be performing well, but this is not reflected in our business,” said Wolff. Buffalo Freight provides an international leg into and out of SA for Unitrans customers, allowing the parent company to fill a missing link in its supply chain services. “It’s a good fit and advantageous to all concerned,” said Wolff. Operations haven’t changed: Buffalo Freight Systems trucks await incoming planes on the tarmac of OR Tambo International Airport with subcontracted trucks for special cargo, while smaller vehicles shuttle documents to and from customs and the air carriers. Offloaded consignments are then whisked to customers. The system gives Buffalo Freight one of the fastest turnaround times in the freight industry in SA, says Wolff. Airfreight consolidations are offered to and from Israel, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Germany and the UK. Own sea freight groupage containers are packed in Germany, Hong Kong and Shanghai, with a lot of cargo to and from Dubai, and Africa.
