Cargo risk can be as simple a matter as a leaking transport container causing damage to goods in transit, or the lack of a simple safety precaution when sealing a container, thereby inviting the attention of thieves, says Stephane Sakoschek, regional marketing manager of Bureau Veritas (BV). BV has a presence in over 150 countries with further representation through 550 offices worldwide. It is headquartered in France.
Bureau Veritas employs over 8000 people attending to the problems of cargo risk management, he says. Many of these are technical experts in their respective fields, concentrating on preventing risks and improving safety and quality.
The company specialises in solving any cargo risk-related problem literally within hours of an enquiry, he explains. This ranges from dunnage evaluation to sampling and laboratory analysis. These bring about very interesting problems for us to identify and report on.
Examples are leaking phosphorus containers - stored in water for transport because they are highly explosive in contact with air. Others include food contamination such as aflatoxins or e.coli and salmonella, which in high enough concentration can prove deadly to humans.
Cargo risk management is about our cumulative experience and expertise which has been proven indispensable time and time again in the daily management of cargo shipping, says Sakoschek. One must keep in mind that it is easier to prevent a risk than it is to solve a problem once it has occurred. That is the secret of cargo risk management, and very often at a fraction of the cost and time.
Bureau Veritas offers a worldwide service of quality control, risk prevention and pre-shipment activities through a regional office situated in Sandton.
