Optix Africa CEO, Steve Ford, is championing the use of smart technology to improve driver behaviour and enhance road safety. With advancements in machine vision and AI, Ford believes that technology can empower drivers to make better decisions, reduce the cost of distributing freight, and create a harmonious relationship between the driver, the road, the environment, and the vehicle.Addressing the Road Freight Association (RFA) at its annual conference, Ford said in-cab driver monitoring systems that utilised machine vision were bringing major change to road transport. These systems can detect critical factors such as fatigue, eye tracking, gaze detection, and inattentiveness. By alerting the driver through beeps and seat vibrations, these systems help combat driver fatigue, ensuring safer journeys. Additionally, video event recorders capture incidents such as distracted driving, failure to wear seat belts, or other unsafe practices, allowing for corrective action and improved driver behav iour. However, Ford acknowledged that previous in-cab machine vision systems had limitations in processing information and prioritising actions. False positives were common, leading to driver frustration. “But with advancements in algorithms and learning capabilities, modern systems are improving, reducing false alerts and improving overall effectiveness,” he said.Beyond in-cab solutions, the importance of external collision avoidance systems was just as important, he said. “These systems monitor the environment outside the vehicle and provide warnings for forward collisions, lane departures, pedestrian or cyclist collisions, headway monitoring, and speed limit adherence. Again, by alerting the driver through sound and seat vibration, these systems enhance driver awareness and assist in preventing accidents.”To ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of these technologies, Ford said there was a need for accurate, fast, off line-capable, and multitasking devices. Integrated hardware and software solutions that address specific driver and operator needs, mitigating false positives and adapting to individual contexts were also necessa r y.“Our goal using these telematics systems is to create a safer environment for drivers by deploying a range of solutions, including safety equipment checks and early warning systems.”
