A recent analysis conducted by JCA Auditors reveals that a staggering 85% of truck crashes on the N3 highway can be attributed to driver behaviour. This alarming statistic reinforces the findings of global research, which consistently highlights the significant role played by drivers in vehicle incidents worldwide. Oliver Naidoo, managing director of JCA Auditors, emphasises the urgent need for heightened attention to driver behaviour and training, citing it as an essential component in ensuring road safety.“Transporters traditionally prioritise the safety of goods and vehicles,” says Naidoo, but stresses that equal emphasis must be placed on adequately equipping drivers for their tasks. Recognising the pressing nature of this issue, he calls for a more targeted approach to driver training in the country, along with increased mentoring opportunities and better allocation of resources. An examination of the latest incident report on the N3 reveals that approximately 60% of all crashes involved trucks, with 62% classified as single-vehicle incidents. These figures directly correlate with factors such as fatigue and driver behav iour. Addressing these concerns requires not only improvements in vehicle maintenance, safety measures, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced policing, but also an equal focus on driver training. While initiatives aimed at creating safer roads are undoubtedly valuable, Naidoo says that the training of drivers is equally vital. By emphasising this crucial aspect, the country can work towards reducing the number of truck crashes on the N3 and improving overall road safety.According to Naidoo, urgent action is needed to address the issues around drivers effectively. Implementing a more targeted approach to driver training, increasing mentoring programmes, and allocating better resources are critical steps to ensure drivers are equipped with the necessary skills for safe road practices. Truck driver training, he says, plays a pivotal role in ensuring safer roads for everyone. The importance of comprehensive training programmes cannot be overstated, as they provide drivers with the necessary skills, knowledge, and awareness to navigate the complexities of operating large commercial vehicles. Through training, drivers learn crucial techniques for defensive driving, hazard recognition, and effective vehicle handling. They gain insights into proper load securement, vehicle maintenance, and understanding of road regulations. Moreover, training equips drivers with strategies to manage fatigue, stress, and distractions, which are common challenges faced on the road. By investing in robust driver training initiatives, companies empower truck drivers to make informed decisions, minimise risks, and prioritise safety, ultimately leading to a significant reduction in truck-related incidents and promoting the well-being of all road users.
