Smart and sophisticated – Gauteng’s latest trade academy opens

The official distributor of the World Customs Organization’s E-Learning Programme, Global Maritime Learning Solutions Empowered (GMLSe), has officially opened its new Gauteng campus, “The Terminal”, in Kempton Park.

Situated at Alt Academy at 4-6 Fortress Street in Rhodesfield, GMLSe managing director Elwyn Pitt said the new facility at the EPT Skills Hub was about more than just another new opening. “It’s about launching a new home for innovation in the forwarding, clearing and supply chain industry."

Speaking during The Terminal’s opening on Thursday, April 23, Pitt emphasised that “the facility represents a shift from traditional teaching to future-ready development”.

“We have intentionally designed this space to be fit for purpose. In an industry as fast-paced as ours, training can no longer happen in a vacuum. It needs to happen in an environment that mirrors the complexity and energy of the global markets we serve."

He added that The Terminal, apart from its obvious architectural bragging rights, was a strong reflection of GMLSe’s commitment to digitisation.

“The supply chain is being rewritten by data, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation,” Pitt said.

“This facility is equipped to ensure our workforce isn't just reacting to these changes but leading them. We are moving beyond paper-based legacies to a digital-first mindset, ensuring our graduates are ‘day one ready’ for the modern world."

However, technology alone isn’t the answer, he said. Even with all the AI tools at our disposal, to succeed at studying trade requires comprehensive commitment within a cohort.

“The soul of this hub is collaboration,” Pitt said.

“No single company can solve the skills gap in isolation. By partnering with Alt Academy and the broader EPT Skills Hub, we are creating a melting pot where industry expertise meets academic rigour. This ecosystem allows us to share knowledge, pool resources and set a new gold standard for logistics excellence."

Pitt also described The Terminal as “a beacon of hope”.

“We are currently facing a national challenge in youth unemployment. By providing high-quality, industry-aligned training, we are creating a clear pipeline for young talent to enter a stable, growing career path. We aren't just giving them a certificate; we are giving them a seat at the table of global trade."
