Offering 6 402 daily flights
worldwide, writes Leonard Neill

THE FOUR international airlines which have launched a global skyteam alliance designed for passenger services are now exploring opportunities to provide cargo customers with the same conveniences and access to worldwide destinations.
The SkyTeam consists of Air France, Delta Air Lines, Aeromexico and Korean Air. Between them they provide 6 402 daily flights, including more non-stop destinations between the United States and Europe than any other airline grouping. Air France serves the alliance to and from South Africa.
Cargo customers will, for the present, benefit from the alliance partnership through reserved cargo space and marketing agreements, but more comprehensive network and product enhancements are currently under development and will be introduced in phases.
In a joint statement, the chief executive officers of the four airlines have stated that the creation of the SkyTeam partnership will alter the competitive landscape for airline alliances.
They point out that Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport, Air France's hub, and Seoul's new Inchon Airport, the future hub of Korean Air, are two of the few major hub airports in the world with room to expand. The possibilities of adding runways and gates, plus additional flights, will be invaluable for SkyTeam planning in the future.
