Project cargo volumes, often directly related to infrastructure development in Mozambique, are set to increase as and when infrastructure spending does. According to Sheila Mahomed, clearing and forwarding manager for LBH Mozambique, opportunities are clearly on the increase and volumes are expected to increase significantly towards the middle of next year. “Business has not been as busy as we would have liked this year on the project side,” said Mahomed, who believes many of the big projects are still on hold. But with many of these projects and developments set to kick off in 2014 it will be all systems go on the project side. According to Mahomed, planning is an important aspect of success when it comes to project cargo – especially in the African context where poor infrastructure has a severe impact on logistics. At the same time one has to contend with bureaucracy while equipment is also not readily available. Despite this, says Mohomed there is opportunity for project cargo – especially in light of all the developments planned for Mozambique. Mozambique has steadily been investing in its infrastructure in recent years – albeit it slow going at times. This against a background of major growth in the country’s mining sector, which is expected to continue to grow in the years to the come. At the same time the government is working hard towards creating an environment where business is easy to do and investment in infrastructure is also high on the agenda to ensure improved logistics in the country.
