In a bid to address the real
issues facing its members,
the South African Shippers’
Council (SASC) is changing
tack and focusing more
strongly on operations,
according to executive director
Beverley Waugh.
Addressing delegates at
the recent Transport Forum
in Johannesburg, Waugh
said four working group
subcommittees had been
established to specifically
address operational challenges.
“Many of the challenges that
affect cargo owners happen on
an operational level – hence
the need to focus on this.”
She said a transport
working group had been
established to look at issues
relating to the movement
of cargo from origin to
destination.
“The second subcommittee
will look at issues and
activities around the ports,
dealing specifically with cargo
handling and warehousing
challenges. They will also
work closely with the National
Port Users’ Forum and the Port
Consultative Committees.”
Waugh said the third group
established would look at
the regions such as SADC.
“They will be dealing with
general regional issues,
including matters relating to
Customs and Sars, while the
fourth group has been tasked
with the Transnet division
liaison and will work closely
with Transnet Freight Rail,
the ports authority and the
terminal operators.”
