Gauteng’s new open road tolling system will be just as applicable to visitors to the province as residents themselves. This is according to the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) which is presently upgrading Gauteng freeways and installing tolls across some 185km in the province. According to Siveshni Pillay from Sanral, the free-flowing system, which means no stopping at tolls, will see all transactions recorded electronically via an e-tag. Vehicles will be linked to an account that is either pre-paid or guaranteed post paid. “Visitors to the province will be able to register before they set off on their trip and be able to use the pre-paid system. Alternatively, on arrival in Gauteng, a visitor will have to stop at a satellite station and register then.” Pillay said Sanral was in the process of finalising toll tariffs while the toll gates were under construction. “It will work very much on the same basis as a cell phone – you will get a prepaid account allowing you to use the system.”
