Safmarine leads sponsors in bid to buy vessel

AN INDUSTRY project team has undertaken to raise funds towards acquiring an ex-navy training ship, Navigator, currently berthed and out of work in Durban.
Announcing this, Commander Peter Fitt of Maritime Projects said the money was to be raised through an international maritime raffle. Safmarine has already given its support by donating two round tickets to Japan valued at R80 000 on one of its passenger/container ships.
Other companies wishing to become involved with prizes or advertising should contact (031) 266 7515.
Navigator is a twin-screw motor vessel designed and built in Durban for the South African Navy for the training of seamen and based in False Bay.
Now, provided the initiative is successful, she could become a means for young scholars and sea cadets in the Durban and Richards Bay region, and even further afield, to wet their feet and gain real sea experience.
