Safmarine adds capacity to South America

SAFMARINE HAS added capacity on its recently announced South Atlantic Express (SAX) service between South America and South Africa. A second vessel – the Safmarine Bioko – has joined the fleet to provide fortnightly sailings on the route. SAX is the first new Safmarine-only operated service since the acquisition of the line by the Danish AP Mo/ller-Maersk Group. “The SAX service, with fortnightly sailings between Itajai, Santos and Port Elizabeth, provides a direct eastbound call into South Africa from South America. Most other services currently operating between South America and South Africa only call South Africa westbound,” a Safmarine spokesperson said. Port Elizabeth is seen as a convenient transhipment hub for import and export goods from the East.
