SOUTH AFRICA has produced the world’s first seedless lemon and it’s proving to be a major threat to Cypriot lemon and citrus exports worth an estimated £50 million (R700m) a year to the UK. According to londongreeknews.co.uk, SA grower Citrogold launched its Eureka Seedless lemons earlier this year. The product will sell in Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer’s, and is also targeting the catering industry. The lemons are part grown by accredited and licensed citrus growers in the Eastern Cape and are claimed by the growers to offer a higher juice content than other lemons.
