SA maritime technology triumphs

A technology solution came up trumps at the recent Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Gauteng export awards when International Maritime Information Systems SA (IMIS SA), a black-owned SMME, took home the “Emerging Exporter of the Year Award”. The company was established in 2002, and three years later developed its own vessel tracking and fish management solution, commercially branded as MARITRAQ™. It’s described as ideally suited to the tracking, navigational and safety needs of subsistence fishermen as it is an affordable solution with no recurring monthly costs. Chief executive officer, Chiboni Evans, said that among the biggest challenges the company faced was overcoming the administrative hurdles that existed in a number of local institutions. IMIS SA has so far been unable to replicate its successes abroad in the South African market.
