SA likely worst economic performer this year - analysts

South Africa is likely to be the worst economic performer in sub-Saharan Africa this year as water and electricity constraints, falling commodity prices and deteriorating business confidence are affecting the health of the economy, according to a report published by market analysts Focus Economics.

"Higher tariff barriers, protection for inefficient industries, deeper State interventions and more overall protectionism will not help lift economic growth to the levels of 6% and above that seem to be a minimum for the country to emerge from the current logjams, inefficiencies and stagnation,"  Gary van Staden, analyst at NKC African Economics was quoted by News24 as saying.
