South Africa has much to learn from its Brics partners in terms of optimising trade. Speaking at the Breakbulk Africa conference in Cape Town recently, Arnaud Thibault of CMA CGM said Brazil was a good example not just for South Africa, but Africa. “It is about deriving maximum benefit from one’s coastline,” he said. “If you look at Brazil as an example then you see that competition attracts shipping lines. Having strict laws in place that don’t allow for competition prohibits trade.”
