Company investigates most
cost-
effective solution

VOLKSWAGEN South Africa is taking another look at Ro-ro vessels to transport the bulk of the 68 000 export order for Golf 4s.
Spokesperson Matt Gennrich says most of the first delivery of 8 000 vehicles would be sent in containers, but that at the request of Germany the Ro-ro option was being reconsidered.
The first vehicles will be exported in containers used to ship in components.
No formal decision had been taken either way as to the choice of transport method for the remaining portion of the order.
But part of our task is to reduce costs where possible. If it does prove that Ro-ro is more cost-effective and possible, then we would do that. We will be looking at the process in terms of logistics, he said. VWSA has also decided to bring its waxing facilities to protect the vehicles while on-board ship in-house.
Part of a R150-million capital investment for the export order has been for a modern waxing facility in the Uitenhage plant, says Gennrich. Up to now the process has been done by outside contractors.
