The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard
Gauge Railway (SGR) project is set
for completion in June 2017. Once
completed it is set to increase rail
cargo transportation from the port
of Mombasa by 32%.
According to Kenya’s principal
secretary for transport, Wilson
Nyakera, already 200 kilometres
(of a total 472 km) of track has
been laid, with the remainder
expected to be complete before
the end of the year. Test runs are
scheduled for early next year.
He said that the SGR was also set
to reduce the cost of transportation
by $0.08 from $0.20 a tonne per
kilometre. Once completed, the
track’s total capacity will be 4 000
tonnes per trip.
“The SGR will significantly
reduce turnaround time at the
port, thereby enhancing the East
African region’s competitiveness as
a logistics hub,” said the Shippers'
Council of East Africa (SCEA) CE,
Gilbert Langat.
