THE RAILROAD Association of South Africa (RRA), which was established 18 months ago and currently represents 25 leading companies drawn from the transport sector, has elected Gorman Zimba of Siemens as its second president, succeeding Charles Modise who remains on the council.
The association is made up of transport users, private industry service and equipment providers, and parastatals and aims to identify and investigate transport alternatives in the national interest, says executive officer Allen Jorgensen. He told FTW that the RRA had opened dialogue, for the first time in some instances, between various transport industry players. The RRA is currently organising a symposium on safety management and safety culture to be held next month (April) as well as a 'Transport Round Table' meeting for May.
"The aim of this is to establish a transport forum where business leaders, transport service providers and government agencies can discuss important issues facing transport and trade in SA. We're also arranging a programme of activities to better inform the public about issues that impact directly and indirectly on all people relying on transport, whether this be for commuting or the transport of goods. We believe this can play a role in keeping transport cost escalations to a minimum."
