Rail funding comes in for criticism from RFA

THE ONGOING road versus rail battle was high on the agenda at the recent Road Freight Association AGM. “Rail continues to enjoy significant government funding,” said chairman Thandeka Mgoduso, “with Transnet set to invest in excess of R78-billion in infrastructure – of which about 45% will be spent on improving freight rail infrastructure and rolling stock.” While she felt this should assist in increasing efficiencies in rail somewhat, road continues to dominate the market as the mode-ofchoice. “Projections are that the industry will enjoy a 6-7% annual growth rate".
