The Zhen Hua No.23 cut an impressive image as it sailed into Pier 1 container terminal in Durban at the weekend to deliver two railmounted gantry cranes purchased by Transnet Port Terminals for R36 million each. The cranes can be seen at the front of the vessel, although dwarfed by the four larger shipto- shore cranes destined for Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Once commissioned by the end of May, the two cranes for Pier 1 terminal will be used to transfer containers between internal road vehicles and rail wagons more quickly and easily. “This will substantially increase the turnaround of containers to and from the terminal,” said Michelle Phillips, business unit executive at Pier 1.
