Protest threatens Durban port access

Transnet Port Terminals has warned that landside operations at the Port of Durban may face delays on today (June 19) due to access constraints and congestion arising from planned nationwide protest action by Cosatu.

Waterside operations are expected to continue as planned.

A planned march along Bayhead Road and Langeberg Road could affect landside access between 08:00 and 13:00, according to a notice circulated by Durban Gateway Terminal. Transporters have been advised to anticipate possible disruptions.

Exporters Western Cape (EWC) said the warning highlighted the vulnerability of supply chains to operational disruptions.

"The logistics sector has worked hard to restore confidence in South Africa's supply chains, but that recovery remains fragile," said EWC chairperson, Terry Gale.

"Exporters operate in highly competitive international markets where reliability and certainty are critical. Any disruption, even if temporary, can result in delays, increased costs and reputational damage that ultimately affects South Africa's competitiveness."
