Electronic booking is next

P&O NEDLLOYD has launched a comprehensive and up-to-date internet facility through which shippers from across the globe can instantly access current sailing information and port stack dates.
This comes as a result of the Documentation and Revenue System (DRS) that was put in place in all P&O Nedlloyd offices worldwide subsequent to the merger of P&O Container Lines and Nedlloyd Lines in 1997.
The DRS is currently regarded as a more advanced booking system than any other global system, says Wim Lagaay, P&O Nedlloyd's general manager marketing. Since all P&O Nedlloyd offices throughout the world are linked to one system, we can tap into the network at any given time, enabling us to offer the most up-to-date and complete information on our database.
Sailing schedules are outdated almost the minute they're printed, Lagaay says. This is due to natural occurrences like wind and other weather conditions which can cause detrimental delays.
The online schedules will immediately reflect any changes on fixed routes such as on SAECS, where the service is often altered in order to suit the needs of various trades. Previously last-minute changes to fixed routes would not be reflected in printed schedules.
In addition, P&O Nedlloyd will forward the updated information to all its clients on a weekly basis, either via e-mail or fax.
This technology will ultimately extend to more than providing comprehensive online sailing schedules, Lagaay continues. Announcements are expected shortly on P&O Nedlloyd's container track and trace and electronic booking options.
The P&O Nedlloyd website can be found at www.ponl.co.za.
