DELTA MOTOR Corporation is the leading exporter of South African built vehicles into main right hand drive African countries this year, according to statistics supplied by Naamsa.
In the first 10 months Delta exported a total of 1 847 vehicles - including 1 413 Isuzu KB one-ton pickups - to the main right hand drive (RHD) markets of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Mauritius and Kenya.
In the same period the second placed exporter was Toyota
(1 410) followed by Nissan
(1 238) out of a total
6 849 vehicles sold.
Delta's director of exports and allied business, Andre van Rooyen, says that despite tough trading conditions in Africa the company has managed to increase its market share by more than six percentage points to 27%.
If sales to Kenya, where General Motors has an assembly plant are excluded, then Delta accounted for 30% of vehicles exported from South Africa to right hand drive markets, he said.
This is a significant development in that more than one in four new vehicles supplied to these markets is a Delta product even in market conditions which have not been particularly favourable this year.
Leading the way has been the strong performance of our Isuzu KB pickups which have dominated this market segment for a share of 38% against its main competitors Toyota (18%) and Nissan (23%).
