KUEHNE & NAGEL has demonstrated a firm commitment to growing its Southern African market with the appointment of Karl-Heinz Balzer as regional manager sub-Saharan Africa based in Johannesburg.
Balzer, who relinquishes his post as managing director to Hylton Gray, will concentrate on extending the Kuehne & Nagel Africa network in Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Angola, Swaziland, Tanzania, Mozambique and Mauritius. At the moment we are concentrating on Southern and Eastern Africa but are keen to gradually build up into the rest of the continent, he said.
Balzer's involvement in trade with Africa spans 27 years, and he is optimistic of growth prospects. South Africa will clearly be the engine for that growth, he told FTW.
Balzer's new portfolio was previously managed from the company's international head office in Switzerland.
Hylton Gray, who takes over as managing director on January 1, is currently financial director.
He becomes the first South African to head up the company.
Having developed a flair for sales and marketing, he is enthusiastic about the challenge of moving into the freight forwarding side of the business.
The position of regional financial controller will be filled by Markus Nuesch, who will relocate from Kenya. He is joined by Christophe Wenke, previously based in Switzerland, who has already taken over as regional IT (information technology) manager.
