Panama Canal gets set for 12 000-TEU vessels

VOTERS IN Panama have approved a $5.3 billion expansion programme which will double capacity of the Panama Canal, enabling it to accommodate the world’s largest tankers and container ships, according to a report from Bloomberg. The project is expected to be completed by 2014 and will create a third set of locks, giving freighters carrying up to 12 000 containers an alternative route.
