Insurance companies are calling on shippers to ensure their forwarders and transporters follow the Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code) to minimise risk and loss. This code, a joint publication of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), was designed to address major concerns for all parties involved in global cargo securing, relating to poor practice in the packing of cargo transport units, said freight insurance specialist TT Club’s Mike Yarwood. Whilst the code is nonmandatory it does provide a global code of practice for cargo packing. – Liesl Venter
