Outlook for world food prices is ‘stable’

The current growth in food production globally, and notably in Africa, could result in food prices staying the same, or even declining, in the next ten years, according to participants at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) public forum, held in Switzerland last week.

The forum pointed out that agriculture was a mainstay of the African economy and that the sector faced many challenges, including the need for food security.

Participants pointed to the National Food Security Act in India – which provides subsidised food grains to about two thirds of India's population – as a solution to mitigating Africa’s challenges.
