Working group will develop streamlined air cargo systems A WORKING GROUP committee comprising freight forwarders, cargo handlers and clearing agents has been formed by SAA Cargo to play what it terms a key role in participating in the IATA initiative, Cargo 2000.
In this, international airlines and couriers are developing high-tech computerised systems which will allow cargo handling and freight management to become vastly more effective by the turn of the century.
Cargo 2000 is a global initiative which will provide the ability to streamline the movement and management of freight within SAA Cargo's route network, says SAA Cargo executive manager Charles Fairweather.
Essentially Cargo 2000 is a joint process which will enable participating organisations all over the world to align their business procedures in such a way as to add value to their ultimate clients.
This will include electronic messaging which will facilitate the movement of cargo. The information component will be given a much more important emphasis.
The requirements of the global customer are to source components worldwide and integrate them in the production process. The role of cargo agents and airlines is critical in ensuring the effectiveness of the Ôjust-in-time' trend. Delays in delivery of vital components can not only halt a production line, but add significantly to costs, he said.
SAA Cargo's systems will make use of bar-code scanning methods coupled to radio frequency technology. These scanners can be hand-held or mounted to forklifts, and will transmit their data to the SAFRON computer system.
It is expected that a bar-code label and transmission of FWB (electronic airway bills) will form part of the Ôready for carriage' concept. All cargo adhering to these standards will be facilitated in the fast lane and will enable consignments to be ready within a much shorter time span.
