Opposition party calls for SAA bailout conditions to be made public

Democratic Alliance (DA) shadow deputy minister of Finance, Alf Lees, has said that he will be writing to the minister of finance, Malusi Gigaba, to request that Treasury’s bailout conditions for South African Airways (SAA) be made public.

This would improve accountability within the airline as one of the conditions of the bailout was alleged to include the appointment of a CEO for the carrier, he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Lees noted that the same condition had been placed on a guarantee issued to SAA in 2016 and yet it still had not had a permanent CEO since September 2015.

The R2.207-billion bailout will be paid to the national carrier to settle its debt with Standard Chartered Bank in order to avoid a default – as well as the risks associated with it – according to a statement by Treasury earlier this week.
