One to watch: Bagamoyo Port, Tanzania

Bangamoyo in Tanzania is to become a regional trade and logistics hub, with the Tanzanian government having signed-up investments worth the equivalent of over R140 billion to build a mega-port and rail and road connections, according to UK-based international forwarders, Tuscor Lloyds.

The project has received finance from China and Oman, which will be used to develop port facilities in order to boost Bagamoyo’s capacity to 20 million TEU.

The beauty of Bagamoyo, the forwarder added, is the potential for further growth after the first phase is complete. It plans to welcome mega ships with around 8 000 TEU capacity in two to three years’ time, but wider project completion may take anything up to 10 years.
