It was sad news for FTW when the death of Captain David Anthony Rennie was announced to us on Monday. He died last Friday after a long illness. Dave made a lifelong contribution to the SA and international shipping industry, graduating from the General Botha Naval College, and eventually becoming a master mariner in the merchant navy. He converted his seagoing background into that of a land-based business executive, still serving the shipping and general freight industry. He was most recently known for his duties as CEO of Grindrod Freight Services, and a director of Grindrod Limited and subsidiaries such as Island View Shipping and Ocean Africa Container Lines. He was also a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and a key proponent for the formation of the SA Association of Ships' Operators and Agents (Saasoa). Dave had also served the local industry as a leader of the former Association of Shipping Lines (ASL), as chairman of the Container Liner Operators' Forum (Clof), as an adviser to the minister of transport and a director of the TT Club in London. He has also been a valuable source of information to FTW about the activities of his business units and of the industry in general. We shall miss his wise words. Our thoughts go out to his loved ones Jane, Lloyd and Amy. CAPTION Dave Rennie
