Nuclear programme not the answer to power woes

A wind turbine is being installed every three days in South Africa.

In a notice gazetted this week, the Department of Energy has been given the go-ahead to procure nuclear energy and call for quotes for its 9 600-MW programme.

It’s a move that has been widely criticised.

Gavin James, director of Rainmaker Energy, which specialises in innovative renewable energy solutions, was quoted by CNBC Africa as saying: “The cities of tomorrow will produce their own electricity. We won’t need power stations.”

In South Africa, 39 renewable energy projects contribute about 2 050 MW to the grid. This figure is growing as a wind turbine is being installed every three days in South Africa, according to the company.
