A challenge for businesses
that need to legally and
safely transport radioactive
material is finding a logistics
service provider that
complies with onerous local
and international licences
and regulations related the
movement of high-level
hazardous cargo.
Ntokozo Meyiwa-Mogorosi,
managing director of SOC,
NTP Logistics (NTPL), which
specialises in transporting
high-value, time sensitive and
hazardous cargo domestically
and internationally via
road, sea and air, said
the movement of
radioisotopes was a
complex process.
“The one size
fits all logistics
service that is
generally offered
by the freight
industry is not
sufficient.
Radioisotopes products have
a limited shelf life, are of
high value and are classified
as a class 7
hazardous
commodity,”
she said.
“The
challenge
in handling
radioactive
material is to
find an agent
or forwarder
that can
handle the
commodity
and have
the relevant permits and
licences in place to
handle hazardous
cargo,” she said.
Meyiwa-
Mogorosi said
NTPL worked
closely with the
World Cargo
Association (WCA)
and the WCA
Time Critical
speciality network which has
6015 independent freight
forwarders in 187 countries
and 781 cities
whose core
business is in
international
time-sensitive
logistics.
“Every
member has
demonstrated
the capability
to handle
customised
logistics
solutions on
behalf of their
clients that require extremely
rapid and reliable service,”
she said.
“The service that NTPL
offers is available to
individual clients as well
as other freight forwarding
companies that do not have
the necessary permits,” she
said.
“All our staff members
are trained and certified
to handle dangerous goods
shipments."
Meyiwa-Mogorosi added
that volumes were down
due to global economic
conditions.
“The focus is to diversify
into other market sectors that
require a similar just-in-time,
premium service such as the
pharmaceutical and aviation
industries,” she said.
“We also aim to increase
our basket of services to
include warehousing and our
road transport network.
