THE NEW laws relating to labelling all imported textiles, made up textile articles, clothing, shoes and leather goods come into effect from April 14. From this date, forwarders Safcor Panalpina told FTW, none of the affected articles may be imported unless they are legibly and permanently marked in a conspicuous manner with words stating clearly the country in which they were made or produced. And, the report added, “where greige fabrics have been used to produce dyed, printed
or finished fabrics locally, the labelling must stipulate that the product has been dyed, printed or finished in SA from imported fabrics.” Meanwhile, locally-manufactured products made from imported materials must be labelled “made in South Africa from imported materials” - and all reconditioned, rebuilt or remade articles must be clearly marked as such.
