Changes in management
systems by the Maputo Port
Development Company
(MPDC), together with
investment in the harbour, are
helping increase
productivity to the
point where 21 671
tons was loaded into
the 79500-ton bulk
carrier Anastasia K
in a 24-hour period.
She was fully
loaded in 78
hours, instead
of the planned 104 hours,
at an average 469
tons per crane
hour, according
to Kemmie
Mahabeer, MPDC
senior operations
manager.
MPDC is actively marketing
the terminal to mineral
exporters and traders, most of
which have their head offices in
Gauteng.
Maputo is the closest
port to Gauteng and to the
Mpumalanga mines.
It sets a new benchmark,
even though the “environment
was very conducive to obtain
high productivity
standards. It was a
weekend (12 hours
working instead of
eight hour shifts),
there was only one
bulk vessel working,
and there was good
preparation,” he
says.
Management changes that
are helping to increase
productivity
include moving
the time of
the morning
planning meeting
to focus on priority
operational activities, better
co-ordination between the
different departments in the
port, and improved allocation
of resources.
